Alarm raised in Germany! 6 Frankfurt Airport employees infected with malaria, one of them dies

A Frankfurt Airport employee has died from malaria after six employees at the airport were infected with the dangerous disease. The five infected individuals are receiving medical treatment, a spokesman for airport operator Fraport said.
Traps have been installed at the airport and the captured mosquitoes will be analyzed in a laboratory to determine their species and origin.
" With regret, we must confirm that an employee has died as a result of the infection. We have provided full information to all employees and encourage them to consult a doctor if they experience any symptoms ," a Fraport spokesperson told the BBC.
In July, the outbreak was reported to have involved four infected workers. The Robert Koch Institute, a German federal government agency and research institute for disease control and public health, previously said the four workers fell ill between July 4 and 6 and were brought in by mosquitoes by plane.
The institute said that malaria in Germany almost exclusively affects long-haul travelers who have been infected in malaria-endemic areas and that malaria transmitted within a German airport is rare.
" The lack of a travel history may lead to a delayed diagnosis. A delayed diagnosis increases the risk of a severe course of disease ," the institute said in its epidemiological bulletin.
The last case of malaria at the airport was in 2023, also at Frankfurt Airport, she added.
