After clashes with Hegseth, US Army Secretary resigns

US Army Secretary Dan Driscoll submitted his resignation to the White House on Monday, after months of clashes with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.

According to people familiar with the situation, Driscoll held a conversation with President Donald Trump on Monday, where he expressed his concerns about the direction the US military is taking.

The clashes between Driscoll and Hegseth mainly concern the modernization of the Army and the removal of several senior military leaders. Among them was the former Army Chief of Staff, General Randy George, a respected officer with a long military career.

Driscoll, an Iraq War veteran and close ally of Vice President JD Vance, had been telling insiders for months that he planned to leave the Pentagon around the US midterm elections.

However, his resignation comes at a difficult time for the US administration. The Pentagon is facing a protracted conflict in the Middle East and a lack of senior leadership confirmed by the Senate.

It is not yet clear whether President Trump has officially accepted Driscoll's resignation and who will replace him as acting secretary of the Army.

Dave Fitzgerald, the deputy secretary of the Army, is also expected to leave the Pentagon this week. Fitzgerald and Driscoll have been among the leading voices supporting the inclusion of small technology companies in the US military, with the aim of making it more flexible and innovative.

Meanwhile, Hegseth has removed from office dozens of officials and military leaders who have supported similar initiatives.

Among them was General James Mingus, the former deputy chief of the Army, as well as General Christopher Donahue, who commanded US forces in Europe and Africa and played a key role in supporting Ukraine and military planning against Russia.

After the departure of Mingus and George, both positions were taken by General Christopher LaNeve, who was selected by Hegseth in a surprise move and elevated to the rank of four-star general.

Now, the US Army will be led by LaNeve as acting Chief of Staff and by an acting civilian official, as it faces significant challenges in the Middle East and Europe.
