Membership without voting rights?/ Milatović against Rama and Vučić's proposal: There is no short path to the EU
Montenegrin President Jakov Milatovic has commented on the idea put forward by Rama and Vučić that Albania and Serbia should be part of the European Union even without veto rights. Milatovic calls this a "legitimate" approach, but makes it clear that his country is not deviating from the course.
"We hope to close all chapters by the end of this year, or during next year, so that the second half of 2027 and 2028 will be for the ratification of Montenegro's entry into the EU in all parliaments of the member states. Whether it will be 2028 or 2029, is not decided, but it should happen within the current mandate of the Commission ," Milatovic said in an interview with the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung.
"For the authors it is a completely legitimate idea. However, we are following the classic membership process as all countries have done so far. We are negotiating to become full members ," he added. During the interview, Milatovic was also asked about the lack of support from Germany or France. He said he will focus only on things that Montenegro can control.
