"We have an almost primitive mechanism", Celibashi: Electronic voting

The State Electoral Commissioner, Ilirjan Celibashi, said that by the end of the week we will have the preliminary results of the May 11 elections. According to him, the delay will be due to the counting of the Diaspora vote, since for voting within the country, it is expected to have a preliminary result by Wednesday afternoon.

"The counting process is very physically tiring, stressful. Fier was typical and the CEC was committed there to bring the process back to normal. It is normal for people to get tired because some of them have been dealing with the elections for more than 24 hours. But the political parties, who have proposed the counters, need to build a scheme for replacing the counters in shifts. One person cannot spend 20 hours dealing with the election documentation. A solution must be found," Celibashi said in an interview with A2 CNN.

Asked if he sees new challenges, Celibashi said that the problems have been recurring for years. "Unfortunately, I see that political parties, as soon as the elections are over, have little will to address these problems that we see, including voting and counting. For the CEC, an added challenge is voting from abroad."

Celibashi called for the time to vote and count votes electronically in Albania. "In my opinion, we have an almost primitive mechanism for the election administration process in Albania. I think it should be expanded as a voting method. I think that for everyone there is no longer any dilemma regarding the integrity of this process and it would be beneficial for this system to be extended even further in the next elections. I believe that by the end of this week we will have the full preliminary results for both electoral subjects and candidates. I believe that we will have the voting within the country by Wednesday afternoon. As for the voting within the country and abroad, we will have it at the weekend," he said.
