EP Rapporteur for Albania: Strengthen the fight against corruption, we support

The European Parliament’s Permanent Rapporteur for Albania, Andreas Schieder, called for further strengthening of the fight against corruption and full support for the work of SPAK, during a press conference at the end of his annual fact-finding mission in Tirana. “The work of SPAK should remain uninterrupted by other actors and the work of SPAK should not be hindered by other institutions,” he said. According to him, all institutional links should do their part to guarantee the functioning of the rule of law and Albania’s progress towards the European Union.

Asked about the opposition's violent protests, Schieder made it clear that violence is not an acceptable tool in a functioning democracy. "Democracy with Molotov cocktails is not good," he declared, adding that political conflicts should be resolved through arguments and dialogue on the political stage, not by escalating violence.

The EP rapporteur also underlined that the political situation in Albania is not as dramatic as it is often presented in the media, calling for responsibility in the way developments are reflected, as this also affects the perception of European citizens about the country.

Regarding Sali Berisha's statements, Schieder said he cannot comment on every individual claim, as this would take him outside his institutional role. "Don't push me to comment on everything Berisha says," he told reporters.
