Giant portrait of 5-year-old Hid Rajab, killed in Gaza, unveiled on Barcelona

Protesters have unveiled a giant portrait of 5-year-old Palestinian Hind Rajab on a Barcelona beach, two years after she died in the war in Gaza, and her mother has called on the international community to pay attention to the children of Gaza.

Hind's agonizing cries for help before her death, while trapped in a vehicle under Israeli fire, are revived in the film "The Voice of Hind Rajab," which won the Silver Lion at the Venice Film Festival last year and has been nominated for an Oscar this year.

During the Israeli operation in response to the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023, Hid was trapped in her car for hours, pleading with Palestinian rescuers on a mobile phone to send help, while her aunt, uncle, and three cousins were already dead.

When the ambulance finally arrived, communication with the girl and the rescuers themselves was lost. Twelve days later, the bodies of the girl, her relatives, and two members of the ambulance were recovered from the area.

In Barcelona, hundreds of people carried a large 55-meter-long raincoat with Rajab's face next to a large Palestinian flag and the message "Freedom for the Children of Gaza."

"The children of Gaza are not asking for compassion. They are asking for their right to live, to sleep without fear, to play without bombs, to grow up, just to grow up," said Hid's mother, Wissam Hamada, 29, as she watched the unveiling of her daughter's portrait.

"Hid Rajab's voice didn't stay in the car, it traveled across the border," said Jordanian-Canadian actress Shaza Kilani, who plays a Palestinian Red Crescent rescue worker in the film and took part in the protest on the Barcelona beach.

Asked this week about the deaths of Hid and her relatives, the Israeli military said the incident was under investigation and declined to comment further. Israeli forces say they have never intentionally targeted civilians in war, accusing Hamas members of putting their lives at risk by using them as human shields.
