French magazine "captures" Rama: Port of Durres, a major center for money laundering in the open sky
For a long time, no narcotic substances have been seized in the port of Durres, even though international reports describe it as a major center for cocaine and other drug trafficking.
But the problem of the port of Durres appeared during an interview by Edi Rama with the famous French magazine 'Le Point'.
During this interview, the French journalist said that the EU is concerned that Albania is not sufficiently fighting corruption and money laundering.
Meanwhile, she took the port of Durres as an example, emphasizing that it is a major center for open-air money laundering.
“Open-air” money laundering occurs when money obtained from criminal activity, such as drugs, smuggling or corruption, is transformed into legitimate money without serious efforts to hide it. This can happen in ports, markets or visible businesses, where criminal and legal activity intertwine, and no one seriously checks the transactions.
Anne Nivat: European officials believe that your country is not doing enough to fight money laundering and corruption. The port of Durres, the second largest city in your country, is particularly considered a major center for open-air money laundering. What is your reaction to this?
Edi Rama: These kinds of unfounded claims, presented as truth, are a disease of our world. Durrës is the second largest city in the country, but its port is not a major center of open-air money laundering in itself. The problems in Durrës are much less important than elsewhere. Aren't there similar problems in Marseille, Rotterdam, Antwerp or Barcelona?
