Ornella Vanoni, the icon of Italian music, passes away

Italian music icon Ornella Vanoni has died at the age of 91.

"With the passing of Ornella Vanoni, Italy loses one of its most original and refined artists. With her unique voice and her incomparable performing ability, she wrote important pages in the history of Italian song, theater and entertainment," stressed the Minister of Cultural Heritage, Alessandro Giuli.

"I can't say anything. I'm speechless and I wasn't prepared for all this. It doesn't seem possible. I just can't say anything," writes host Fabio Fazio.

"The death of Ornella Vanoni is a great sorrow. Her music will remain in our hearts forever," writes presenter Simona Ventura.

Considered one of the most iconic figures in Italian music, she was active since 1956, releasing over 100 albums and compilations and achieving a total of over 55 million copies sold.

A woman of great style, she recorded her biggest hits in the 1960s and 1970s with songs such as “La Musica è Finita”, “Eternita”, “L'Appuntamento” and “Una Ragione di Più”.

Born on September 22, 1934 in Milan, Vanoni began her career in the theater before launching her career as a singer on the stage of the Lombardy capital, under the guidance of Giorgio Strehler, the renowned theater director, who was her partner and mentor.

In 1964, she won the Naples Festival, a music competition that no longer exists, and went on to participate in the prestigious Sanremo music festival, an Italian institution, where she placed second in 1968 with "Casa Bianca."

In 1999, she became the first singer in the history of Sanremo to receive a career award.

In the following years, Vanoni continued to perform and record albums.

Her latest album, "Diverse", released in 2024, revisits some of the artist's biggest hits, but with new arrangements.
