Poll: Trump at lowest point in term, only 1 in 3 Americans approve of his job performance

Donald Trump's approval rating remains at the lowest point of his presidency, driven by widespread dissatisfaction with the war in Iran and his handling of the US economy, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll.

Only one in three Americans approve of the job President Trump is doing in the White House, for the third consecutive Ipsos/Reuters poll.

Trump's low popularity is increasingly seen as a potential obstacle for the Republican Party in the November midterm elections. Republicans aim to retain control of the US Congress, but the outlook for President Trump's party does not look good.

Democratic voters appear more united, with 46% expressing “excitement” about the midterm elections. On the other hand, 31% of Republicans express similar sentiments.

When asked which party they would vote for if the election were held today, 36% of those who declared themselves independent chose Democrats and 22% Republicans.

Since mid-August, Trump's approval rating has been at an all-time low, well below the 47% he reached at the start of his second term in office. It's even lower than the lowest level for his predecessor, Joe Biden, who reached 35% in October 2024.

Like Biden, Trump is facing widespread resentment over high inflation. Gasoline prices have risen since he ordered strikes on Iran in February, a war that only 36% of Americans approve of, according to the poll.

Seven in 10 Americans, including four in 10 Republicans, disapprove of Trump's handling of the high cost of living. Last month, a majority of registered voters surveyed said Democrats have a better handle on the economy than Republicans, marking the first time in a decade that the Democratic Party has taken the lead on a question about the economy.

The four-day survey was conducted on a sample of 1,167 adults from across the country, with a statistical margin of error estimated at ±3%.
