Chaos in Mexico threatens World Cup, Bolivia and Portugal warn FIFA

The Bolivian Football Federation has announced that it will send a letter to FIFA, requesting strengthened security measures for the 2026 World Cup play-offs, which will take place in Mexico in March.

The request comes after a wave of violence erupted following the death of drug lord Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, known as 'El Mencho'. "We will ask for all security measures to be increased. As a delegation we are taking every precaution," said the president of the Bolivian federation, Fernando Costa, adding that they are awaiting possible decisions from FIFA, including a possible change of venue for the matches.

The qualifying tournament, which will award two places for the 2026 World Cup, will be held in Guadalajara and Monterrey, with Bolivia, Jamaica, Iraq, Congo, New Caledonia and Suriname participating. Bolivia will face Suriname on March 26 in Monterrey.

These security concerns have also been expressed by Portugal. The Portuguese Football Federation announced that it is closely monitoring the situation for the friendly match against the home team on March 28 at the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City. The absolute priority remains the safety of the players, where Cristiano Ronaldo is also expected to be present, the staff and the fans.
