The investigation into the involvement of football players in sports betting in Italy continues to receive increased attention there. According to intercepted conversations, Nicolò Fagioli is at the center of an increasingly complex scandal.
Italian media report that he borrowed 587,000 euros from 31 different people, using various methods to convince acquaintances to give him money. Despite earning millions, Fagioli was trapped in a spiral of debt due to his addiction to illegal gambling.
One of the methods he used was selling Rolex watches, which he claimed to have obtained at a low price in order to resell them at a higher price. On many occasions he mentioned the name of his Juventus teammate, Morata, to make the situation more convincing. In one message, he wrote to a friend: “I, through Alvaro Morata, find Rolex at a lower price and he resells it to me. I have been making this investment with him for a year.” However, Morata is not directly involved in the financial scheme, but is often mentioned as the source of the luxury watches.
The biggest problems started when he failed to repay his debts. Many messages show the anger of creditors. “You ask everyone for money and you owe everyone. You are crazy!” is one of the messages discovered. But there were no cases when the debt was not repaid for almost a year.
In one case, Fagioli asked Tommaso De Giacomo – the key figure in the investigation – to intervene to calm one of the lenders. De Giacomo wrote to him: “The solution is found, but everyone must behave. Nico has made mistakes and will fix things.”
But there are also cases when his friends advised him to get better so as not to allow his career to be ruined solely by his involvement in sports betting.
