Albania is losing population, especially young people, but the shrinkage of this age group is not being accompanied by a easing of the labor market.

On the contrary, the latest INSTAT data show that the number of unemployed people aged 15-29 has increased at double-digit rates during the second quarter of 2026, while their employment has declined.

On January 1, 2026, the resident population of Albania decreased to 2,335,930, about 27.4 thousand inhabitants less than on January 1, 2025. The contraction is most noticeable among young people, where between 2022 and January 2026, young people in the 15-29 age group shrank by 62 thousand people or 13.4%.

But, as the number of young people is falling, the number of those looking for work and not finding it is increasing.

According to INSTAT data, in the second quarter of 2026 there were 36.7 thousand unemployed people aged 15-29, up from 31.6 thousand in the same period of 2025. Within a year, over 5 thousand unemployed young people have been added, or 16.1%.

At the same time, the number of employed young people fell from 177.4 thousand to 170.3 thousand people, or by about 7 thousand employees, or 4% less. The labor force aged 15-29, which includes both employed and unemployed people, fell slightly from 209 thousand to 207 thousand people.

Calculations based on INSTAT data show that the youth unemployment rate increased to around 17.7% in the second quarter of 2026, from 15.1% a year earlier, a deterioration of around 2.6 percentage points.

The performance of young people contrasts with the rest of the labor market. The total number of unemployed people in the country decreased by 4.2% in one year, to 104.6 thousand people. In the age group 30-64, the number of unemployed people fell by 12.1%, or about 9.2 thousand people. Only among young people the trend was in the opposite direction.

As a result, young people are making up an increasingly large share of the country's unemployed. In the second quarter of 2025, 15-29-year-olds accounted for about 29% of the total unemployed, but a year later their share rose to about 35%.

The job market in our country has not historically been attractive to young people, but recently the conditions have become even more difficult. The education system does not seem to produce the profiles that current businesses are looking for. There is an overproduction of graduates in traditional branches and a significant shortage of specialists in technical fields, technology, or specialized trades that are required by the private sector.

The massive departure of young people, especially those with higher education or good skills, creates instability in the market. Meanwhile, many young people who remain are either waiting to leave, or are in a transition phase looking for better jobs, but without long-term success./ B.Hoxha
