Hague decision/Britain calls for calm: We strongly support Kosovo, we are proud

The United Kingdom has reaffirmed its support for Kosovo following the verdict of the Kosovo Specialist Chambers against four former leaders of the Kosovo Liberation Army.

British Minister for Europe, Stewart Wood, has stated that London respects the independence of the Specialist Chambers and their judicial process, emphasizing that the United Kingdom remains committed to justice, accountability and reconciliation in the region.

"The United Kingdom remains a close friend and partner of Kosovo, strongly supporting its sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity, as well as peace in the Western Balkans," Wood stated.

He also highlighted the UK's role in the NATO intervention in 1999 and in supporting Kosovo's independence in 2008.

"We are proud of the role we played alongside NATO allies in helping to prevent a humanitarian catastrophe in 1999 and in supporting Kosovo's independence in 2008," the British minister said.

Wood described the verdict as an important moment, but emphasized that it relates to individuals and does not constitute a judgment on Kosovo's statehood, sovereignty, or right to determine its future.

In his response, the British minister called on political leaders and public figures to promote calm and ensure that reactions to the decision are peaceful.

"The Court's findings relate to individuals and should not be used to incite tensions between communities or across the region," the response states.

Wood stressed that the United Kingdom will continue to work with partners in the region to support peace, justice and a secure and prosperous future for all communities.
