Sunday Telegraph Analysis: Albanians "champions" in English prisons,

If there were a championship for foreign prisoners in the prisons there in Great Britain, Albanians would win it.

This refers to an analysis published by the Sunday Telegraph newspaper, where for the seventh consecutive year, Albanians are ranked with the highest number of prisoners of foreign nationality.

According to the article, around 1,200 Albanian citizens are currently serving time in prisons in England and Wales, ranking first after 911 Poles, 729 Romanians, 634 Irish and 370 Jamaicans.

The cost of foreign prisoners, according to the Sunday Telegraph, is worth 1.3 million pounds per day, while each prisoner has an annual cost of 55,000 pounds.

The article further states that Albanians are serving sentences for criminal offenses related to drug trafficking.

Of the total of 1,200 Albanians in prisons in England and Wales, 439 of them have been convicted of trafficking and selling cocaine.

Among them, the Sunday Telegraph says, is Ronaldo Zani, 26, who was deported twice for drug crimes, only to return to the UK for a third time and be caught again and jailed last month.

Figures show that during 2024, 84 Albanians were convicted of drug-related crimes with a total sentence of 407 years in prison.

By the time they finish serving their sentences, they will cost British taxpayers 21,164,000 million pounds.

Of them, 19 have received sentences ranging from 6 to 33 years in prison.

Since the agreement signed between the Albanian and British governments in 2023 for the transfer of prisoners, 6 convicts have been brought to continue their sentences in our prisons.

Among them are Erald Mema, sentenced to 25 years in prison for drug trafficking, and Klodian Çopja, sentenced to 17 years in prison for cocaine trafficking worth 60 million pounds.

It is learned that Mema and Çopja are serving the remaining sentence in Drenova prison in Korça./ Tch
