Belgium publishes the balance of the Sky ECC operation: One third of the messages were in Albanian

Belgian authorities have published a summary of the results of the operations launched after the dismantling of the encrypted platform Sky ECC, five years after the start of one of the largest police actions in the country's history.
According to official reporting, about a third of the messages exchanged on the platform were in Albanian, while 578 suspects are identified as users with this native language. Belgian authorities emphasize that criminal groups from the Balkans have gained ground in Belgium, especially in drug trafficking.
Belgium has been closely cooperating with the Albanian Prosecutor's Office in investigations related to Sky ECC. According to the data, the information shared has helped solve 15 murders and 15 attempted murders in Albania. Data has also been shared with Kosovo, Montenegro and North Macedonia.
Remote control of drug trafficking
Investigations revealed that drug shipments to Belgium and Latin America were controlled by equipment located in countries such as the United Arab Emirates, Turkey, Morocco, Albania and other Balkan countries. This allowed criminal group leaders to manage operations remotely, without having direct contact with the cargoes.
Over 1,200 convicts and billions of messages analyzed
Over 1,200 people have been convicted in cases initiated after the operation against Sky ECC
Around 5,000 potential suspects have been identified
More than 1 billion messages have been analyzed
Over 224 million euros have been seized
Sentences totaling 3,684 years in prison have been handed down.
The cases include not only drug trafficking, but also violence, money laundering, illegal possession of weapons, and violation of professional secrecy.
Due to the extensive international network, Belgian authorities have deployed liaison officers in Colombia, Brazil, Turkey, Morocco, Italy and Albania. A magistrate has been appointed to coordinate cooperation with the United Arab Emirates, which has extradited 13 suspects to Belgium.
