Spain, burqa ban in two cities, left opposes the decision

Two towns on Spain's Costa del Sol are set to ban the burqa, A2CNN reports. Women wearing the burqa will no longer be allowed to enter municipal buildings in the towns of Rincon de la Victoria and Alhaurin el Grande.

The proposal was put forward by the right-wing VOX party, with politicians insisting that the ban was for security reasons, as well as to "guarantee the dignity and safety of women".

VOX councilor in Rincon de la Victoria, Carlos Chinchilla, applauded the ban and said that "the burqa will not be allowed in municipal buildings despite the opposition of the left, which embraces a false tolerance that destroys our identity and, 'accidentally', allows the most patriarchal symbol that exists."

His comments came after left-wing parties strongly opposed the ban. In Rincon de la Victoria, the ban was passed with the support of the center-right PP political party, led by mayor Francisco Salado.
