M. had attempted to cause a bloodbath at night at a police station in Linz am Rhein in September. But he was caught by the police after he had been banging on a bulletproof glass lock at the station for hours.
The public prosecutor, who had requested eleven years in prison, describes the night of the crime as follows: "At around 2:40 a.m., he entered the Linz police station armed with a machete with a blade length of 47.3 centimeters with the intention of killing all the police officers there," writes bild.de.
The prosecutor continued: "He hit the windows with the machete about 50 times and shouted that he was here to kill the police and would not stop until he died himself."
According to the indictment, he literally shouted: “I will kill you, Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, and I will go straight to God!” A police officer finally ended the dangerous situation and was able to subdue Arlindo M. with a Taser and arrest him.
In his apartment, investigators found concrete evidence of his radicalization, such as a flag of the so-called Islamic State (IS) painted on the wall. In the court's opinion, the defendant had been radicalized beforehand – fueled by calls on IS internet forums.
When determining the sentence, the court took into account that no one other than the defendant was injured in the attack.
Arlindo M., who suffers from a personality disorder, lost his job shortly before the crime and his marriage had also broken down.
