Gaza ceasefire, Hamas official: We are ready to implement the second phase of

Hamas said today that there are "positive signs" for the continuation of the ceasefire with Israel in the Gaza Strip, during talks with mediators in Cairo regarding the second phase of the ceasefire agreement.

"Signs are positive for the start of negotiations for the second phase of the ceasefire ," Hamas spokesman Abdel Latif Al-Kanwa said in a statement, as efforts by Egyptian and Qatari mediators continue to complete the implementation of the ceasefire agreement that came into effect on January 19 and its first phase ended on March 1.

A high-level delegation from the Palestinian Islamic movement met today with Egyptian mediators to discuss preserving the fragile ceasefire in Gaza, after more than 15 months of war sparked by Hamas's October 7, 2023, attack on southern Israel.

The spokesman stressed "the need to force the Israeli mediators to implement the agreement" while assuring that Hamas is "ready to begin the second phase in a way that meets the demands of the Palestinian people."

Israel wants to extend the first phase of the ceasefire until mid-April and is calling for the "complete demilitarization" of the territory, the withdrawal of Hamas from the Gaza Strip and the return of the last hostages, before moving on to the second phase.

Hamas, which insists on remaining in Gaza, where it took power in 2007, is demanding the complete withdrawal of the Israeli army from Gaza, an end to the blockade of the territory and its reconstruction, as well as financial aid based on the results of a recent Arab summit.
