Torrential rains hit Argentina, 13 dead

At least thirteen people have died in Argentina due to torrential rains that hit the city of Bahia Blanca, a port of the Latin American country on the Atlantic Ocean 600 kilometers southwest of Buenos Aires since Friday morning.

Eleven of the thirteen victims have been identified. The city hall did not rule out the possibility that more bodies could be found in this city of 350,000 inhabitants.

Homeland Security Minister Patricia Bullrich stressed, during an interview she gave from Bahia Blanca to radio station Mitre, that it is now a “destroyed city.” She also said that searches are continuing for two young girls who may have drowned in the waters.

According to reports in the Argentine press, the victims are two sisters, aged one and four. Around 850 people remained displaced yesterday afternoon, according to municipality data.

The phenomenon was "unprecedented," said Javier Alonso, Minister of Security in the province of Buenos Aires, where Bahia Blanca is administratively located.

"The biggest storm in Bahia Blanca occurred in 1930 when 175 millimeters of rainfall were recorded, while what hit the city the day before yesterday was almost 'triple that,'" he explained.

The government released 10 billion pesos (8.6 million euros) in emergency aid.
