UK, France and EU condemn latest violence in Syria

UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy is the latest to add his voice to condemn the mass killings in Syria.

In a post on X, he says that reports that "a large number of civilians have been killed in coastal areas in Syria in the ongoing violence are horrifying," adding that authorities in Damascus must protect all Syrians and "define a clear path towards transitional justice."

Earlier, the European Union issued a statement condemning attacks by "pro-Assad elements" on interim government forces.

"The EU also calls on all external actors to fully respect the sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity of Syria," the statement added.

France has also condemned violence targeting "civilians because of their faith" as well as prisoners.

France called for independent investigations into the latest killings with its foreign ministry writing in a statement that Syria's interim government must guarantee "the preservation of Syria's ethnic and religious pluralism".
