Donald Trump is considering the possibility of withdrawing American troops from Germany and relocating them to Eastern Europe, according to the British media outlet "The Telegraph", which cites sources close to the American president.
These sources close to the Republican administration have stated that Trump is considering the removal of about 35,000 military troops from Germany - a move that could further worsen relations between the United States and the European Union. The head of the White House has expressed dissatisfaction with Europe's approach to defense and has accused European leaders of "pushing the world towards war." Currently, about 160,000 American troops are deployed outside the United States, a large part of whom are in Germany.
“Trump is angry that Europe is pushing the situation towards a new conflict,” a source close to the White House said. National security spokesman Brian Hughes said that while there has not yet been an official announcement, “the US is constantly reviewing the positioning of its troops to adapt to current threats to its interests.”
Trump is considering relocating troops from Germany to Hungary, a country that has maintained close ties with Russia. At an emergency EU summit in Brussels, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán blocked a deal to increase support for Ukraine, defying the stance of the rest of the member states. Orbán has consistently opposed EU sanctions on Moscow.
Trump also wants to review the US commitment to NATO, favoring those countries that have increased their military spending to meet the defense-as-a-gender target. He has been harshly critical of member countries that have not met the 2% of GDP defense spending threshold, arguing that the security burden falls unfairly on the United States. During his first term, Trump ordered the withdrawal of nearly 12,000 troops from Germany, home to some of the largest U.S. military bases. However, this decision was suspended by the Joe Biden administration amid fierce criticism from Congress.
The United States currently has over 35,000 military troops in Germany. These soldiers are deployed to the European Union as part of Washington's commitment to NATO, in connection with urgent military operations and to protect Europe from threats from Russia.
