Tensions rise, EUFOR increases troops in Bosnia and Herzegovina

The European Union Force (EUFOR) Althea mission in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) is expected to be reinforced with 400 additional soldiers and four helicopters, in response to the escalating political situation in the country, writes A2 CNN. The new troops are expected to arrive on March 12 or 13, local media report.

According to available information, the reinforcement will consist of 120 soldiers from Hungary, 120 from Romania and 120 from Bulgaria, while the rest will come from Slovenia. This decision was taken as EUFOR assesses current developments in BiH, particularly in light of recent actions by the authorities in Republika Srpska (RS).

The crisis escalated when employees of the State Investigation and Protection Agency (SIPA) in the Banja Luka Regional Office walked off the job following orders from the RS Ministry of Interior. This action followed a series of unconstitutional measures by the RS authorities, including laws signed by RS President Milorad Dodik that would have banned the functioning of state institutions in the entity.

In response to the rising tensions, some state-level officials have called for EUFOR to intervene as a guarantor of the military implementation of the Dayton Peace Agreement. Meanwhile, Dodik has asked EUFOR to stop persons from the Federation intending to enter the territory of the RS.

EUFOR has yet to issue an official statement on the situation. The arrival of the reinforcements is expected to enhance the mission's ability to maintain stability and implement the provisions of the Dayton Agreement amid the ongoing political crisis.
