Bill and Hillary Clinton refuse to testify to Congress on Epstein case. Republicans threaten criminal charges

Bill and Hillary Clinton refused on Tuesday to testify in a Republican-led US Congressional investigation into the late financier and convicted sex abuser Jeffrey Epstein, saying it was a partisan exercise.

"Each person must decide when they have seen or experienced enough and are ready to fight for this country, its principles, and its people, regardless of the consequences," the Clintons wrote in a letter to Republican Representative James Comer, who chairs the House Oversight Committee.

“For us, now is that moment.”

Comer has threatened to hold both of them in contempt of Congress if they do not appear before the committee, which could potentially lead to criminal charges.

In the letter shared on social media by Hillary Clinton, they said they had attempted to provide "what little information" they had to help the investigation and accused Republican Comer of shifting the focus away from the failures of the Trump administration.

“We did this because Mr. Epstein’s crimes were horrific. If the government has not done everything it could to investigate and prosecute these crimes, for whatever reason, that should be the focus of your work… There is no evidence that you are doing so,” they wrote.

“There is no plausible explanation for what you are doing, other than partisan politics,” they added, stressing that they actually expect Comer to instruct the committee to find them in contempt of Congress.

President Donald Trump's administration, under pressure from Trump's political base, has ordered the US Department of Justice to release files related to criminal investigations into Epstein, who was once friends with both Trump and the Clintons, in accordance with a transparency law passed by Congress.
