DASH: Israel and Lebanon have agreed to extend the ceasefire

The US State Department said on May 15 that Israel and Lebanon have agreed to extend the ceasefire for 45 days to "enable further progress", while announcing follow-up talks brokered by the United States later this month and in June.

"We hope that these discussions will advance lasting peace between the two countries, full recognition of each other's sovereignty and territorial integrity, and the establishment of genuine security along their shared border," wrote US State Department spokesman Tommy Pigott on X.

The State Department announced that it mediated talks on May 14 and 15 between the parties, describing them as constructive.

Israel has been carrying out attacks against Hezbollah militants in Lebanon since March 2, two days after the start of the US-Israeli war against Iran, when Hezbollah forces opened fire in support of Tehran.

Hezbollah is a militant group and political party that controls much of southern Lebanon. It is considered a terrorist organization by the United States, while the European Union has blacklisted only its armed wing.

A ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon is in effect until April 17, intended to reduce the intensity of fighting between Israel and Hezbollah. But it has failed to do so as hundreds of people have been killed in attacks since then and each side has accused the other of numerous ceasefire violations./ REL
