Marta Kos: Challenges exist, but without Kosovo there can be no security in

European Union Enlargement Commissioner Marta Kos called on the Kosovar political class to find common ground to end the long political and institutional deadlock and to form stable institutions so that the country can move forward towards the European Union.

Marta Kos made this statement during a visit to Pristina, where she held separate conversations with the acting President of Kosovo, Albulena Haxhiu, and the acting Prime Minister, Albin Kurti.

The EU Enlargement Commissioner said that Kosovo does not yet have the status of an EU candidate country, "but in order to achieve this and join the EU, Kosovo must have stable and functional institutions as soon as possible."

"My call is clear on this visit to all political actors to find a way to restore institutional stability. Many reforms in Kosovo have stalled due to the repeat of elections and the country must get back on track after a lost year in 2025," said Marta Kos during a joint  press conference with Prime Minister Kurti.

Commissioner Kos said that the membership process has been postponed and should be postponed also due to the security aspect.

"There can be no security in Europe without Kosovo, because Kosovo is an integral part of a bigger picture, and the reason why enlargement today is much more than just enlargement has to do with caring for security in Europe."

Kosovo's acting Prime Minister, Albin Kurti, for his part, said that "Kosovo shares common values with the European Union and the country is fully aligned with the EU's foreign and security policy."

"It has been over 40 months since we applied and the renewed momentum of enlargement by the European Union should result in Kosovo's well-deserved advancement. Public support for the EU and for EU membership remains consistently around 90 percent in our country and is among the highest of all candidate countries."

"We are aware of the challenges that exist, but unity in commitment is required," Kurti said, addressing the Commissioner for Enlargement, saying that "we are not looking for shortcuts or backdoors, only a meritorious process."
