Trump warns Taiwan: Don't talk about independence, I don't want war! I want things to calm down

US President Donald Trump warned Taiwan not to take steps towards formally declaring independence from China, following the conclusion of a two-day summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing.

"I don't want anyone to declare independence," Trump declared, hinting that Washington is taking a more cautious stance on the Taiwan issue.

Earlier, Trump had said that the US was "not engaged in any way" regarding the self-governing island, which China considers part of its territory.

According to reports, after talks with Xi Jinping and discussions on numerous trade agreements, the American stance towards Taiwan appears to be softening.

Trump stated that US policy has not changed, but stressed that he does not want conflict with China.

"I don't want war. I want things to calm down and China to calm down," he said in an interview with Fox News.

On his return to Washington, Trump told reporters that he had discussed the Taiwan issue at length with Xi Jinping, but avoided answering whether the US would militarily defend the island in the event of conflict.

According to Chinese state media, Xi warned during the meeting that the Taiwan issue remains the most important topic in US-China relations and that mismanagement could even lead to clashes between the two countries.

Trump said he does not believe in a war with China over Taiwan.

"I don't think there will be war. Xi doesn't want war," he declared.

Meanwhile, China has increased military exercises around Taiwan in recent years, increasing tensions in the region.

The Trump administration had previously announced an $11 billion arms package for Taiwan, including advanced missile systems, a decision that had provoked a strong reaction from Beijing.

Trump said he has not yet decided whether the arms sale will proceed and added that he will first consult with Taiwan's president, Lai Ching-te.
