Statements by two Chinese citizens who fought against Ukraine: Russian forces

Two Chinese nationals captured fighting against Ukraine said during a press conference that they had been "fed lies" by Russia and that Vladimir Putin's forces were not as strong as they claimed.

The soldiers, Wang Guanjung and Zhang Renbo, were captured fighting for Russia in eastern Ukraine earlier this month.

Handcuffed and dressed in military fatigues at a conference organized by Ukrinform, the national Ukrainian news agency, the pair said: “All of Russia has been feeding us lies.

"Russia is not as strong as they claim and Ukraine is not as backward as they say."

Zhang and Wang said they were captured soon after reaching the front line and had not killed any Ukrainian troops.

President Zelensky demanded that Beijing explain why Chinese soldiers were fighting for Russia.

The two servicemen stressed that they were not fighting on behalf of China and had no ties to Chinese state authorities, but they were recruited as mercenaries through online advertisements.

Wang said he was recruited through an advertisement on TikTok.

He told reporters that he then traveled by bus to Kazan in southwestern Russia, before passing through Rostov-on-Don and entering the Donetsk region of eastern Ukraine, where he enlisted in the army with Mr. Zhang.

Zhang told reporters he was in Russia as a tourist when he spotted an advert offering two million rubles (£18,400) and decided to sign up.

Asked about conditions inside Russian camps, Chinese prisoners described the lack of water and electricity.

Zelensky said last week that there were at least 155 Chinese nationals fighting for Russia, a claim that Beijing has dismissed as "irresponsible".

China denies that a significant number of its citizens serve in the Russian armed forces, saying it advises citizens to "avoid participating in the military operations of any party" and is a "firm supporter" of peace in Ukraine.
