Georgia limits foreign support for political parties

The Legal Affairs Committee of the Parliament of Georgia has approved a draft law in its first reading, which aims to restrict political parties and individuals involved in electoral activities from receiving donations and grants from foreign legal entities.
The bill, initiated by the Georgian Dream faction, prohibits individuals with political goals from receiving financial assistance through lectures, seminars or other public events from legal entities registered in Georgia or abroad. Receiving grants would require approval from the Georgian government or an authorized body.
The legislation provides that individuals who accept grants without approval will face fines of up to twice the amount received.
However, these restrictions will not apply to grants intended for general and higher education, scientific activities or international sporting events.
The authors of the initiative emphasize that the law aims to preserve the country's sovereignty and prevent foreign influence on internal political processes.
Once adopted, the draft law will create a new legal framework for political associations operating in Georgia.
