Mali on alert after attacks/ Jihadists and separatists plunge African country

The security situation in Mali has become significantly tense following a series of coordinated operations launched in the early hours of April 25 by armed groups in several areas of the country. According to various sources, jihadist formations in collaboration with separatist movements in the north have simultaneously struck military targets and strategic points, including on the outskirts of Bamako.

It is reported that the fiercest clashes have been recorded in the north of the country, where rebels linked to Tuareg structures have claimed to have taken control of the city of Kidal, an area of high military and symbolic importance.

Government authorities, led by a military administration that came to power after the changes of 2020 and 2021, have responded by declaring that their forces have managed to curb the attacks and that “the situation remains manageable.” In the capital and several other areas, the presence of security forces has been significantly increased, while restrictions on movement for citizens have also been reported. In response to the developments, diplomatic missions of the United States and the United Nations have advised their personnel in Bamako to avoid movement and stay in safe environments.

Security experts have described the offensive as one of the most coordinated in recent years, comparing it to the 2012 escalation, when the country lost control of much of its northern territory. Mali continues to face a long-running crisis of instability, involving armed groups with links to jihadist organizations as well as local separatist movements.
