WHO confirms: Vaccines do not cause autism

A new analysis by the World Health Organization (WHO) confirmed that there is no link between vaccines and autism, contradicting theories spreading in the United States.
The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) last month changed its official website with wording that challenges the scientific position that vaccines do not cause developmental disorders such as autism.
Long-standing research clearly shows that there is no link between vaccines and autism or other neurodevelopmental disorders. But Robert F. Kennedy Jr., the U.S. Surgeon General, has long promoted anti-vaccine rhetoric and inaccurate claims linking the two.
Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the director-general of the WHO, told a news conference in Geneva that autism is not a side effect of vaccines. The new analysis, by the Global Advisory Committee on Vaccine Safety, reviewed 31 studies in multiple countries over 15 years, including vaccines containing thimerosal and aluminum adjuvants.
"The committee concluded that there is no link between vaccines and autism, including vaccines containing aluminum or thimerosal," Tedros said. This is the fourth such review, following those in 2002, 2004 and 2012, and all have reached the same conclusion: vaccines do not cause autism.
The alleged link between the MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella) vaccine and autism stems from a flawed 1998 study, later retracted due to falsified data. Its results have not been confirmed and have been contradicted by many subsequent studies.
Tedros stressed that in the last 25 years, mortality among children under five has decreased by more than 50%, from 11 million to 4.8 million per year, largely thanks to vaccination.
"Vaccines are among the most powerful and transformative inventions in human history," he said. "They save lives from about 30 different diseases, including measles, cervical cancer, malaria and many others." / WHO
