WHO: Nine doctors killed in Lebanon, attacks on medical staff must stop

The Director-General of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, has called for an end to attacks on medical staff, after nine paramedics were reported killed this Saturday in Lebanon.
Ghebreyesus said the doctors died in five separate attacks, bringing the number of health workers killed this month to 51. Seven other doctors were also reportedly injured.
“New tragedy in southern Lebanon today. March was the second deadliest month for health workers in Lebanon since WHO began monitoring attacks on healthcare in the country in October 2023. More than 120 health workers are reported to have been injured since the escalation in Lebanon began on March 2, mainly in the south of the country. Health workers are protected under international humanitarian law and should never be the target of attacks. The only way to end these tragedies is to end attacks on healthcare, now,” he wrote on the social network.
The WHO chief also said that four hospitals and 51 primary health care centers in Lebanon were currently closed, "significantly limiting access to essential care at a time when it is most needed."
