"Slovakia is Europe!"/ Massive protest against Prime Minister Fico

Under the slogan "Slovakia is Europe!", tens of thousands of people have once again protested in the streets of Bratislava and other cities. The protest is mainly directed against the pro-Russian course of Prime Minister Robert Fico.

With slogans such as “resign, resign” and “Russian agent”, demonstrators across the country are demanding the resignation of Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico. In Bratislava alone, according to estimates by the Dennik N website, 42,000 to 45,000 people gathered on Freedom Square. According to organizers, protests took place in 41 areas across the country, as well as in 13 cities outside Slovakia. These were the largest protests since 2018, when the murder of an investigative reporter and his fiancée sparked outrage and mass protests in the country. Various opposition groups and the “Mier Ukrainy” (Peace to Ukraine) civic initiative, which advocates for stronger military support for the neighboring country, have called for peaceful protests under the slogan “Slovakia is Europe!”

Fico's meeting with Putin sparks new protests
The latest wave of protests against the left-wing populist government was sparked by a visit by Fico to Moscow and talks he held with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The government justified this by saying that this diplomatic trip has secured the EU country's gas supply. The indignation of the protest participants was also directed against Fico's statement that Slovakia could break away from the EU and NATO due to its foreign policy orientation. The demonstrators are demanding an immediate end to any cooperation with Russia. They accuse the prime minister of cooperating with autocrats and of turning Slovakia into an autocracy.

Fico fears attempts to overthrow the government
Tensions in domestic politics intensified last week, after Fico's government accused political opponents of causing chaos and wanting to overthrow the government. According to Fico, the protests could lead to illegal attempts to overthrow the government. Therefore, the government is taking preventive measures without making it clear what those measures are. Fico returned to power last year after his Smer party won the parliamentary elections. He won with an electoral program that is pro-Russian and hostile to America. Since then, Slovakia has cut off military aid to Ukraine, which has been attacked by Russia. He has also criticized EU sanctions on Russia and declared that he will prevent Ukraine from joining NATO. / DW
