Weather forecasters predict that snow, hail, rain and frost will cover two-thirds of the eastern states from today until the middle of next week.

Describing the storm as a “historic” storm, US President Donald Trump has approved a state of emergency declaration for South Carolina, Virginia, Tennessee, Georgia, North Carolina, Maryland, Arkansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Indiana and West Virginia. “We will continue to monitor and stay in touch with (authorities in) all states in the path of this storm. Stay safe, stay warm,” Trump wrote in a post on the Truth Social platform.

The National Weather Service (NWS) has warned of an unusually large and long-lasting winter storm that will bring widespread and intense ice accumulation to the southeastern United States, with potentially “catastrophic impacts.” It predicts record low temperatures and cold winds will reach the Great Plains region.

According to the specialist website FlightAware, more than 3,900 flights scheduled for Saturday have been cancelled and another 8,800 flights are scheduled for today.

Many US airlines have issued warnings, urging passengers to remain vigilant and check their flights.

Power outages are escalating, with more than 130,000 homes and businesses without power, mostly in Texas and Louisiana, according to the specialized website PowerOutage.com.

“Tens of thousands of people in the affected areas of the South are without power. Crews are working to restore power as quickly as possible,” said Homeland Security Secretary Kristy Noem. During a press conference, she urged Americans to take precautions: “It’s going to be very, very cold! We urge everyone to stock up on fuel and food … and we will get through this.”
