Washington Post: Pentagon prepares 1,500 troops to control riots in Minnesota

The Pentagon has ordered approximately 1,500 active-duty US troops to prepare for a possible deployment to quell unrest in Minnesota, the Washington Post reported on Sunday, citing defense officials.
Months of demonstrations against Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents in the area escalated sharply in early January, following the shooting death of a woman in Minneapolis.
The Pentagon has now put troops from the Alaska-based 11th Airborne Division on standby in case the violence in Minnesota escalates, WaPo wrote, citing a U.S. defense official. It is not yet clear whether they will be deployed, he reportedly said.
The Pentagon usually prepares for any decision the US president may make, the media quoted a White House spokesman as saying.
On Thursday, US President Donald Trump threatened to invoke the Insurrection Act of 1807 if “corrupt politicians” do not stop “professional agitators and rioters” from attacking ICE agents. The federal law would allow the deployment of troops to eliminate domestic civil unrest or an insurrection.
Trump has repeatedly clashed with Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey over his ongoing crackdown on immigration in the state.
The U.S. Department of Justice has reportedly opened a criminal investigation into the two officials. The investigation, which is likely to include subpoenas, is looking into an alleged conspiracy to obstruct federal immigration agents operating in the state, multiple media outlets reported Friday.
