"Protesters' violence is not the same as police violence"/ Rama

Prime Minister Edi Rama clashed with journalist Maria Tadeo during an interview as part of the "Enlargement Summit", where he discussed Albania's integration process into the European Union and future challenges.

The debate focused on the protests held in Tirana and the violence recorded during clashes between protesters and police. Rama claimed that the police officers were the most damaged party, referring to the number of injured.

According to the Prime Minister, the images circulating on social media create a biased perception of the events, focusing on police violence and overshadowing incidents against officers.

On the other hand, journalist Maria Tadeo reminded Rama that there is a difference between the violence exercised by the police and that of the protesters, as the officers are equipped with weapons, while the protesters are not.

This intervention brought a reaction from the Prime Minister, who addressed the journalist with the question: "Are you provoking me to have a discussion or are you serious?"

Excerpts from the discussion:

Edi Rama: It's complicated, we'll have to explain it one day. Albania is in another phase. We've taken a historic step, from a country with high expectations. People in the country already have high expectations. There comes a point in time when you have to face not just needs, but high expectations. It's not just us, it's happening everywhere.

It would be more complicated, I imagine, for countries that don't yet see what's coming. We have a new reality that is challenging the reality of social media. They are two different worlds. I have seen and experienced it personally and I can appreciate it as a power to create a schizophrenic confrontation with reality.

We had violent protesters and we had twice as many injured by the police. The police were the most injured party in the protests. But on social media and the media that gets its news from social media you would see and think about police brutality. We have to deal with a generation that is growing up in its own reality, it is not easy.

Maria Tadeo: The last time we spoke, you told me that you believed the situation was inflated by social media. One could say that there is a difference between police violence and that of protesters, because the police have guns.

Edi Rama: Are you provoking me to have a discussion or are you serious? When I think that the government and I don't need to change, I will leave this job. My life is a change, I have also changed in marriage. This is what I have in mind all the time.
