German customs blocks package with 32 python skins, was headed to Albania

Customs authorities have discovered 32 python skins during an inspection of an air cargo shipment at Leipzig/Halle Airport. According to the customs administration, it was a dog specialized in detecting wildlife products that flagged the shipment on Friday evening, German media reported.

According to shipping documents, the package weighed 13 kilograms, had a value of $160 and was headed from Indonesia to Albania. The documents stated that it contained a fashion jacket and a piece of batik fabric, authorities said in a statement.

However, during the inspection, customs officers discovered python skins dyed in blue, red and black, measuring between 3.4 and 4.5 meters in length, as well as four pieces of fabric. The skins had characteristic python skin motifs.

The entire shipment was seized. Customs authorities referred to the European Union Wildlife Trade Regulation, which provides for restrictions on trade in endangered species of animals and plants. Depending on the protection status of the species, appropriate permits and documentation are required for their import, export and transit.

The Federal Agency for Nature Conservation (BfN) will now decide whether the case of transporting snake skins will be prosecuted.

Depending on the circumstances, violations of these rules can be punished with fines of up to 50 thousand euros or imprisonment of up to five years.
