A violent incident has been recorded on the northern coast of France, where a migrant armed with a knife threatened a person while trying to get onto a dinghy that was preparing to leave for the UK.
The incident was filmed on Ardelot-Plage beach, where dozens of migrants were boarding an inflatable boat to cross the English Channel. The footage released shows the moment when a conflict breaks out between two people: one was already on the raft, while the other was trying to board it. The situation escalates when the person in the water pulls out a knife and threatens the man in the boat. "I'll kill you," he can be heard saying, waving the gun in the air. One of the people present tries to keep him away, while a British citizen alerts the coastguard to the presence of an armed person. Before approaching the person he had targeted, the migrant appears to throw the knife into the water. However, just a few minutes later, he is seen climbing onto the raft. It is not known whether the boat managed to reach the British coast.
Another dinghy with the colors of the Kurdish flag
The incident comes at a time when migrant crossings across the English Channel are accompanied by tensions and violent episodes. A day earlier, another dinghy was reported to be carrying more than 20 men near the coast of Belgium. Unlike the usual black PVC boats, this dinghy was painted in the colors of the Kurdish flag: red, white and green, with a yellow sun symbol. It was launched at around 03:00 in the morning from a beach near the French border, while Belgian police monitored its movements.
The images have sparked political reactions in Britain. The shadow home secretary, the conservative Chris Philp, accused the Labour government of failing to combat migrant smuggling networks. He claimed that the gangs were operating more openly and that the government's agreement with France to return migrants was not delivering the promised results. Reform UK leader Nigel Farage also reacted, accusing Belgian and French authorities of being passive in the face of these movements. "The gangs are laughing at us," he wrote in a tweet.
Meanwhile, British media reports that the Border Force ship, BSC Courageous, was operating in the Straits east of Calais, but there is still no information whether the dinghy filmed managed to cross the English Channel. According to figures published in the report, since the Labour Party came to power, 85,649 migrants have arrived in Britain by dinghy.
