"Mirror": Butrint, the European "Maldives" with warm weather

Lake Butrint in southern Albania, which stretches along the Ionian Sea coast, has been compared to the Maldives by tourists – thanks to its stunning turquoise waters, white sandy beaches and warm summer climate, writes Rom Preston-Ellis in an article published in the British daily "Mirror".

As classic European holiday destinations become increasingly overcrowded this summer, tourists are looking for quieter places.

Butrint  in Vlora County, Albania ticks all the boxes for a dream getaway – with its gorgeous weather, crystal clear turquoise waters, and ancient Roman ruins.

Many travel experts have even compared it to the Maldives – thanks to its stunning seascape, white sandy beaches, and warm climate.

While visiting Butrint you can enjoy nature trails, explore history and experience the quintessential beach vacation.

The UNESCO-listed Butrint National Park covers an area of 9,424 hectares with diverse landscapes, including hills, lakes, wetlands and salt marshes.

This park is home to the historic city of Butrint, which has experienced continuous habitation since prehistoric times through Greek, Roman, Byzantine, and Venetian rule.

The area's rich past is revealed through its collection of well-preserved relics dating from the 4th to the 19th centuries, a theater, churches, villas, towers, and basilicas. Butrint National Park is a cultural treasure trove.

Visitors can enjoy the natural splendor, marvel at ancient ruins, explore the castle and even board a ferry to a quaint Venetian castle across the Vivar Canal, where many Roman and Ottoman buildings are located.

Tourists planning a visit to Butrint can stay at the "Hotel Livia" - with prices starting from 39 pounds per night.

Vacationers can also choose to stay in Saranda, a picturesque tourist town just 30 minutes away by car, known for its stunning bay, sandy beaches, charming promenade, and historic 16th-century castle.

Saranda boasts a variety of accommodation options – to suit all budgets – all at great prices compared to other popular tourist destinations.

In addition to its affordability, Saranda also scores high for accessibility.
