Price hike/ Abuse of oil prices begins in Albania: The first country on the continent to start increasing prices
Just a few days after experts warned of a fuel price increase, the first signs of price increases have begun to appear in the domestic market. At some retail outlets in Tirana, an increase in the price of diesel by about 4 lek per liter has been observed.
Faktoje observed the same gas stations, two days after the publication of the previous analysis, and found that the price increase has begun to be reflected in some of the retail outlets in the capital.
However, the price increase has not been reflected in all fuel networks. In most retail outlets, diesel continues to be sold at 175 lek per liter.
A similar situation was also noted in Kosovo, where fuel prices increased immediately following fluctuations in international stock markets. However, the responsible authorities there reacted quickly by taking measures to prevent unjustified increases.
MP Erion Braçe criticized the way the market is being monitored, emphasizing that the investigation should start from the import chain and not just from retail outlets.
According to him, monitoring limited to the retail market is not sufficient to understand why prices increase immediately, even when international stock exchanges have not recorded similar changes.
Meanwhile, Braçe also raised questions about the fact that in periods when international prices have fallen, prices in the domestic market have often remained unchanged.
Along the same lines, Democratic Party MP Jorida Tabaku has described the companies' warning of price increases as pure commercial speculation. She stressed that international markets have not yet reflected such an increase that would justify the immediate price increase in Albania.
According to her, fuel prices in Albania are 20–30% higher than in neighboring countries, such as North Macedonia and Montenegro, and the sudden increase in prices without reflection on international stock exchanges shows that the fuel market does not function according to the principles of free competition.
For now, price increases in the Albanian market remain limited. However, in an economy that relies mainly on imports for fuel supplies, developments in international stock markets are expected to determine whether this price increase will be temporary or will continue for longer in the coming weeks.
