Vjosa Osmani proposed constitutional changes, MPs give "OK": Kosovo

Members of the Legislative Committee in the Assembly of Kosovo approved this afternoon the constitutional amendments proposed by President Vjosa Osmani, so that the people have the right to elect the Head of State.

"Given the successive failures in electing the President, I have just submitted to the Assembly the constitutional amendments for direct elections of the President, which were drafted by the Commission for Amending the Constitution in 2011," writes Vjosa Osmani.

The President of Kosovo invites all political parties to vote on these constitutional amendments, so that the people can continue to speak, because political parties are failing in the process.

After discussions, the Legislative Committee, with 6 votes in favor and 2 against, approved the passage of these amendments for consideration and voting in the plenary session. Two votes against were from the Democratic Party of Kosovo.

The Assembly is expected to convene an extraordinary session to consider these constitutional amendments.

Vjosa Osmani's proposals envisage changes to the Constitution of the Republic of Kosovo, so that the election of the president will no longer be done by the Assembly, but through a direct vote of the people.

Media in Kosovo report that the Assembly will meet this evening in an extraordinary session to vote on constitutional amendments proposed by Vjosa Osmani, so that the President of the Republic is elected by the people.
