
Kosovo faces major challenges in the labor market, data: Unemployment at high level

Kosovo continues to face major challenges in the labor market, characterized by a high unemployment rate, a significant informal economy, and inequality in labor policies and practices.
Meanwhile, employment figures in Kosovo continue to be worrying, with figures still showing a high unemployment rate and marked gender inequality.
The Kosovo Agency of Statistics in its latest report showed that in the second quarter of 2024, the unemployment rate in Kosovo was 10.7%, this percentage has not changed at all compared to the second quarter of 2023.
"The unemployment rate was 10.7%, identical to the same period of the previous year. Meanwhile, among young people (15-24 years old), the unemployment rate was 21.2% (5.0% higher than in the same period of the previous year). The inactivity rate continues to remain quite high (57.0%), but a percentage decrease is observed (-2.8%), compared to the same period of the previous year. The inactivity rate among women was very pronounced (75.0%), compared to men (39.1%):, the KAS report states.
The Statistics Agency has shown that about two-thirds of the population in Kosovo (1,074,704) are of working age (85,960 fewer than in the same period of the previous year).
Active persons were 461,675 (8,862 fewer than in the same period of the previous year).
Inactive persons were 613,029 (87,536 fewer than in the same period of the previous year).
Employed persons were 412,482 (7,668 fewer than in the same period of the previous year).
Unemployed persons were 49,194 (1,193 less than in the same period of the previous year).
According to this report, there has been a greater increase in employment among men than among women.
"The percentage of employed men was 55.9% (2.8% higher than in the same period of the previous year). While the percentage of employed women was 20.8% (1.2% higher than in the same period of the previous year). The employment rate was 38.4% (2.5% higher than in the same period of the previous year)."
ASK says that trade, construction and education lead employment in Kosovo.
"The economic sectors that lead in employment continue to be: trade with 20.2%, construction with 11.9%, manufacturing with 11.4%, education with 9.2%, public administration and defense with 7.9%, etc. Women were mainly employed in the trade, education and healthcare sectors with 51.2% of them. Whereas, men were mainly employed in the trade, construction and manufacturing sectors with 47.5%.
Unemployment remains one of the biggest problems of Kosovo citizens.
In the UNDP Public Pulse, in the May 2024 survey, it is stated that poverty (16.6%), unemployment (16.3%) and prices for essential supplies (12.7%) have been identified as the three main problems facing Kosovo.
Their average salary is around 570 euros. At the end of October last year, Kosovo's Prime Minister, Albin Kurti, decided to increase salaries in the public sector – by 55 euros from January next year and by another 55 euros from July.
Previously, at the end of August, Kurti's government also decided to increase the minimum wage to 350 euros. For years, it was 130-170 euros./Monitor
