A question about the double standard of justice between ordinary citizens and former Deputy Prime Minister Belinda Balluku has caused an unprecedented reaction from Prime Minister Edi Rama, who has excluded Syri TV journalist Ambrozia Meta from a press conference.
The journalist asked the prime minister why his rhetoric of punishing citizens with prison sentences was not applied in the case of Balluk, who is under investigation by SPAK for violating equality in tenders in 11 episodes.
Instead of a response, the prime minister launched personal attacks on the journalist and the television station where she works. The verbal clash escalated when the prime minister personally ordered the journalist to leave the room. During an interview with journalist Arnold Kariqi on Syri TV, Meta said that after leaving the conference, the prime minister confronted her in the hallway, telling her that she had been “permanently excluded” from his conferences.
This incident marks another episode of tension between the head of government and the media, raising serious concerns about press freedom and the government's willingness to confront critical questions.
Arnold Kariqi: We followed an insert where Mr. Rama talked about prison thousands of times which was addressed to Albanian citizens, while the opposite happened when it comes to the Deputy Prime Minister, his collaborator Belinda Balluku. This was the question that made Prime Minister Rama nervous. Ndërkohë që ajo që shikojmë në rastin, dhe të gjitha episodet e tjera që ju i përmendët, ka qenë një refren i vazhdueshëm i kryeministrit, i cili gjithmonë është munduar që zgjidhjen ta gjejë te burgu. Dhe ky ka qenë kontrasti që unë jam munduar të bëj me pyetjen. And I asked him to open the door because as long as he asked me to leave the conference, I wanted to leave. And at this moment we are facing each other again in the corridor, where the prime minister has told me that you are permanently excluded from conferences. So he has thrown me out. So I have received a red card from the prime minister, I cannot enter his conferences anymore. It is not the first time that the prime minister has done this….
This has been my constant debate with Rama for eight years and Rama knows very well that I never allow him, when I ask a question on a matter of public interest, to sidestep this by trying to attack and mentioning television, television executives or by engaging in personal attacks.
