"Electoral Reform is Urgent"/ EU Ambassador 'Blasts' Rama:

The European Union Ambassador to Albania, Sofia Moreira de Sousa, conveyed direct messages to the Albanian government during the joint press conference with Prime Minister Edi Rama, where she presented the findings of the European Commission's annual report on Albania.

The European diplomat emphasized that the country has made progress in the integration process, but underlined that corruption, especially at high levels, remains a real challenge that requires continued efforts by justice institutions.

She emphasized that reforms should rely on strengthening the justice system, including the investigation and prosecution of high-level corruption cases.

Another concern raised by the ambassador is related to the functioning of democracy and the political climate in the country. According to her, the report highlights deep political polarization, limited parliamentary oversight of the government, and a lack of meaningful consultations. In this context, Moreira de Sousa called electoral reform urgent, demanding that the process not be limited to the two main political parties, but be inclusive and include other actors.

" Yesterday, the EC adopted the annual report on Albania, which I just submitted to the Prime Minister, while earlier I submitted to the President.
The message of the report is simple, Albania has moved forward. Regarding corruption and crime, the report highlights good progress, SPAK's efforts must continue because corruption remains a real challenge. Any reform must be based on justice reform to strengthen the functioning of the justice system, including the investigation and prosecution of high-level corruption cases. Regarding democracy, the report highlights a deeply polarized climate, limited parliamentary oversight of the government and a lack of meaningful consultations. Electoral Reform is urgent. This requires an inclusive process that goes beyond the two main parties ," she said.
