205 migrants rescued south of Crete and near Gavdos, four operations within a few hours

At least 205 migrants have been rescued within a few hours in four operations carried out south of Crete and near the island of Gavdos, the Greek Coast Guard announced.
The operations were carried out under the coordination of the Joint Search and Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC), with the support of unmanned aerial vehicles of the European agency Frontex and patrol vessels of the Coast Guard. The last two operations took place during the morning, about 24 nautical miles south of Gavdos, where a total of 102 people were rescued from two vessels.
In the first case, a Frontex drone identified a boat with 42 people on board. They were picked up by a patrol boat and transported to the port of Paleochora, in Chania. A second boat was located in the same area, with 60 people, who were rescued and are being transported to the same port.
Earlier, before dawn, two other operations were carried out, where about 103 migrants were rescued. The first operation was carried out about 50 nautical miles southeast of Kala Limenas, where a boat with 54 people was located. After the rescue, they were transported to the port of Kala Limenas.
The second operation took place about 24 nautical miles southwest of Ierapetra. 49 people were found in a boat, who were rescued by the Coast Guard and taken to the port of Ierapetra.
According to Greek authorities, in all four cases, the vessels were initially spotted by Frontex drones. Weather conditions in the areas where the operations took place were reported to have been good.
