COVID-19 certificate scandal, court sentences Granit Xhaka
Switzerland national team captain Granit Xhaka has publicly announced his sentence in connection with the forged COVID-19 certificate. The 34-year-old from Kosovo was given a suspended fine.
Granit Xhaka posted on his private Instagram profile today (Thursday) to announce the outcome of the criminal proceedings against him.
The Swiss national team player was sentenced to a suspended fine of 3,000 francs or 50 working days for obtaining a false certificate by fraud. The probation period is two years.
Therefore, Xhaka will not have to pay the fine, provided he behaves properly during the probationary period. He has already paid the court costs.
"I accept the decision and take responsibility," wrote Xhaka, who says he had previously given a full statement to the district prosecutor's office.
A few weeks ago, the captain of the Swiss national team had spoken publicly about the allegations, and now he has thanked his supporters.
"The many messages of support I have received over the past few weeks mean a lot to me," the Albanian midfielder concluded.
