Arsenal officially appoints Berta as new sporting director: I can't wait to

Arsenal have officially appointed Andrea Bertrand as their new sporting director. The 53-year-old saw the opportunity to work at the North London club and in the Premier League as an offer he could not refuse.

"I am thrilled to be joining Arsenal at an incredibly exciting time for the club," Berta said after signing the contract. "I have followed with great interest the way Arsenal have developed in recent years and have admired the great work that has been done to re-establish the club as a major force in European football, with a passionate fan base around the world.

"The club has great values and a rich history and I look forward to contributing to building a successful future with a great team. I am looking forward to starting in my new role and am really excited to experience my first match at the Emirates Stadium together with our fans."

Arsenal carried out a detailed process and interviewed several candidates, but Berta was the most prominent choice. The 53-year-old was the choice that everyone agreed upon after a detailed recruitment process led by Arsenal's managing director Richard Garlick and vice-chairman Tim Lewis with co-owner Josh Kroenke and manager Mikel Arteta also consulted.

The Italian, who has been available since January after ending his 12-year spell at Atletico Madrid, has been preparing for a Premier League job, having started taking English lessons in London. Earlier this month, the banker was tipped as a frontrunner in Arsenal's careful process to replace Edinson Cavani, who resigned as sporting director in November.

Berta, known as a central figure in the success of Atletico Madrid, is a highly regarded strategist in the transfer market and is valued across Europe not only for his ability to make lucrative financial moves in the transfer market, but also for the quality of the players he brings in. Manchester United considered him as a successor to the recently sacked sporting director, Dan Ashworth, while PSG have also admired his ability to buy and sell players with high efficiency.

Rodri, Antoine Griezmann, Joao Felix, Luis Suarez, Julian Alvarez and Jan Oblak are some of his most successful transfers in the Madrid camp. In Italy, the Italian businessman has previously been asked by Milan and Juventus to entrust him with the keys to the transfer market.
