Loss of former Fiorentina captain/ Court orders hospital to pay 1.1 million euros for Davide Astori's death

The case of the tragic death of Davide Astori, the former captain of Fiorentina, has taken a new legal turn, reaching an important stage with a decision by the Court of Florence.
The Careggi Hospital in Florence has been ordered to pay compensation of around 1.1 million euros to the family of the footballer, who died suddenly on March 4, 2018 in Udine from a heart attack, just hours before a championship match against Udinese.
The compensation will be paid to his partner Francesca Fioretti, daughter Vittoria, as well as Astori's parents and siblings.
This decision was approved by the Court of Florence and then upheld by the Court of Cassation, which determined the hospital's civil liability for the tragic event.
At the center of the investigations and legal proceedings is Professor Giorgio Galanti, the doctor who conducted Astori's medical examinations.
Galanti was sentenced to a year of probation for involuntary manslaughter after judges found that he had failed to correctly interpret several anomalies that emerged during a stress test.
These signs would have required further diagnostic testing, which could have saved the footballer's life.
According to current legislation, financial compensation for this case is due to the health institution where the doctor worked while performing his duties.
For this reason, Careggi Hospital will be responsible for paying the compensation.
However, at a later stage a request for a complaint against the doctor may be considered if gross negligence is found, including the possibility of intervention by the Court of Auditors and coverage by insurance provided for healthcare personnel.
Davide Astori was found dead on the morning of March 4, 2018, in the hotel where Fiorentina was staying before a match against Udinese. An autopsy confirmed that his death was caused by a sudden heart attack.
After this sad event, Serie A matches and some Serie B and C matches were postponed in mourning.
Following Astori's death, Fiorentina and Cagliari decided to retire the number 13 shirt, which he had often worn, in tribute to Alessandro Nesta, one of the greatest figures in Italian football.
