Athlete suspended for 10 years for serious doping

Saudi long-distance runner Mohammed Al-Asiri has been handed a 10-year ban after testing positive for the banned substance darbepoetin in an anti-doping test conducted on September 26, 2023. Following the immediate suspension imposed by the Olympic Council of Asia, he was banned from competing in the 5,000 and 10,000 meters at the Asian Games in Hangzhou.

The case was reviewed under international anti-doping regulations and referred to the Anti-Doping Division of the Court of Arbitration for Sport, which confirmed the violation and imposed a severe penalty due to aggravating circumstances. The authorities found that the use of darbepoetin, a highly sophisticated substance that significantly improves endurance, could not have occurred accidentally and that there was evidence of planning or prolonged doping.

As a result, the initial four-year sentence was increased to 10 years, while all of Al-Asiri's results from September 26 to October 2, 2023 were disqualified. According to the 2021 World Anti-Doping Code, darbepoetin is considered one of the most severe doping substances due to its direct impact on the performance of endurance athletes.
