Tehran creates online "complaints" portal for regime critics abroad

Iranian authorities have launched a new online platform for reporting people living abroad who are considered opponents or “traitors” by the regime. The portal is called “Alaj,” which means “Healing” in Albanian, and according to Iranian authorities it was created as part of efforts to protect national security. State media presents the platform as a mechanism for identifying people who, according to Tehran, act against Iran’s interests.

The semi-official Fars news agency has warned that those deemed “traitors” could face legal consequences. Through the portal and its associated social media channels, citizens can submit information and complaints about Iranians living abroad who are suspected of supporting anti-regime positions. Authorities claim that the data of those who make reports will be kept confidential. According to reports, the platform particularly targets Iranians who publicly express support for international sanctions on Tehran or for military action against Iran. Tensions created by the clash between Iran, the US and Israel have increased the vigilance of Iranian authorities towards opponents of the regime, including those living abroad.

According to data published on the platform's website, about 600 people have been reported so far, while information about some Iranians living abroad has been made public in the portal's database. About 4 million people of Iranian origin or citizenship live outside Iran. Part of the Iranian community has left the country for political reasons, while the activity of Iranian intelligence services outside the country has long been a matter of concern for immigrant communities. It is not yet clear how widely the use of the "Alaj" platform will be expanded and what concrete measures will be taken against people reported through it.
