Out of control fires in Greece, over 100 houses burned in Porto Germeno, mass

Greece is facing one of the worst wildfire seasons of the year, as flames have engulfed several regions of the country, destroying dozens of homes and forcing authorities to order mass evacuations. The hardest-hit area is Porto Germeno, where the deputy mayor of Mandra said more than 100 homes have been burned or damaged. The fire has split into three active fronts and continues to spread rapidly, fueled by strong winds.

Authorities have ordered the evacuation of residents in several settlements, including Agia Paraskevi, Kryo Pigadi, Agios Nektarios and Livadostra in Boeotia, as the flames directly threaten residential areas. During the night, the 112 emergency system sent messages to residents of Domvrena to evacuate towards Thisvis. Aerial extinguishing operations have begun where weather conditions allow, although strong winds are making intervention difficult. The Coast Guard evacuated 12 people from the beach of Porto Germenos in the early hours of the morning.

The flames are also spreading to Panorama Aigialeia in Achaia, where evacuations have been ordered in Arravonitsa, Synania, Agioi Theodoroi, Neo Erineo and other areas. Another large fire has been registered in Skaloma in Fokida, where 28 firefighters, seven vehicles, seven aircraft and two helicopters have been deployed, while residents of the areas of Klima, Magoula, Pigi and Nea Koukoura have been ordered to leave. In Larisa, another fire has broken out in the Kyra Farsala area, while in Achladochori in Serres the flames have been brought under control and there is no longer an active front.

Fire Department spokesman Yiannis Artopoios stated that conditions were extremely difficult due to strong winds, noting that in some cases firefighters “couldn’t even open the vehicle doors.” He called on citizens to strictly follow the orders of the 112 system.

On the other hand, the Minister responsible for Civil Protection, Evangelos Tournas, announced that the emergency mechanism is operating at the limits of its capacities. According to him, the day began with 11 active fires and extreme weather conditions have also limited the use of aerial vehicles. Faced with the aggravated situation, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis visited the Coordination Center of the Fire Department to closely monitor developments. According to the Greek authorities, the regions of Attica and Evia remain at the maximum risk level (level 5), while hundreds of firefighters, dozens of vehicles, planes and helicopters continue to battle the flames on several fronts simultaneously.
